Nursing Supervisor Self-Evaluation

Today Ms. Smith asked me to continue developing performance evaluation standards and objectives for the Nursing Supervisor role. In the last clinical I explored performance standards in the context of an Fort Belvoir Community Hospital’s (FBCH) mission and vision. This week Ms. Smith has asked me to keep the organization’s mission and vision in mind as I develop performance standards and objectives. In previous meetings Ms. Smith and I discussed that performance standards should be clear and concise. The statements should also incorporate SMART criteria. Thus, they should be specific, measureable, achievable, relevant, and timely (MacLeod, 2012).

After thoroughly examining the Nursing Supervisor position description I identified that quality of work, leadership, quality of communication,

Smith agreed with the elements I identified and advised me to proceed in developing some standards and objectives. After reviewing the position description, the organization’s mission and vision as well as considering the critical elements and SMART criteria, I developed the following performance standard for Professional Development (Obj 2.3):

In accordance with the American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice, ANA Code of Ethics, and agency policies the incumbent demonstrates a commitment lifelong learning and to the advancement of the profession of nursing by obtaining professional and technological knowledge that reflects current nursing practice.

Objectives serve as a road map to goal achievement. Therefore, after I developed the standard Ms. Smith had a discussion about what we felt demonstrates excellence in professional development. Together we identified attributes of professional development in nursing such as maintaining all certifications/training up to date, participating in organizational committees, and demonstrating commitment to livelong learning.
