It was 5:45am on a Friday and I was buzzing with anticipation. As I looked at myself in the mirror one last time and marveled at my cheap, itchy, unbreathable polyester, royal blue scrubs and stiff, crisp white, Timberland Pros. It was finally time. Over the past few months I had killed myself to raise my GPA, gather letters of recommendation, and complete all of the various steps to get into a comparative volunteer program at a local hospital. Then I had worked shift after shift in the lab until finally they gave me a spot on the MedSurge floor working with the nurses.

You see we have a lot of big university's In our area that require x amount of volunteer hours to be completed before you can even apply the their programs. As

I tried to look confident and put together as I asked the floor secretary where I could find the nurse I was supposed to be shadowing that day. I just kept telling myself to act like I belonged and not show how nervous I was. I found my nurse and quickly learned that she probably had one too many patients and they were down a CNA.

We quickly rounded on the patients walking and talking as quickly as possible. I watched as she did ten things at once with a smile on here face and this amazing grace and ease. I instantly knew why they had matched me up with her, She was an amazing nurse. Her bed side manner was flawless and even though she had what seemed like and insurmountable amount of work, she never let it show to any of her patients.

I was very overwhelmed at first. This was my first nursing experience of any kind and I was having trouble keeping up with her and keeping everything straight. I quickly found my rhythm though and knew that I needed to make a good impression. I had to make my time there count. So I jumped right in. I figured out where the supply closets were and started changing out the bedding for a patients who's family was upset we hadn't been in yet that morning. If she offered a tiered spouse coffee or ginger ale I want and got it before she was even done talking with the

This case didn’t shock me when I read because I had the similar scenario witnessed in my clinic two years ago. I started my job at the clinic and was assigned to shadow “the best” LPN with 30 years of nursing experience. Before I start, I need to admit that I learned a lot from her. At first, I was impressed by her knowledge and confidence in her nursing job. Her interaction with patients, knowing them and their parents/relatives, and her easiness performing her duties were amazing example for me.…

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

I know we were only at the nursing come for 4 weeks, but this week I was starting to get comfortable and getting to know the routine of some of the residents.…

Overall this experience was a great experience for me. In comparison to previous experiences, I believe that I have grown confidence. At a health fair a few weeks ago, the environment was not private; in comparing the experience I had today, I would have to say that this was certainly more private, comfortable and confidential, and the ability to build a nurse-patient relationship is higher. I think I could have made this interview better by utilizing more nursing concepts, therefore, developing a better plan.…
