Prior to starting the course, I completed an access course in health studies which enabled me to gain a basic knowledge of physiology, health in society and a brief introduction to the NMC. Before this I worked with the elderly and with service users with learning disabilities and mental health illnesses. This allowed me to gain a basic understanding of consent and the importance of it when delivering care. Firstly, I plan to increase my knowledge by reading through guidance and legislation such as The Mental Capacity Act 2005 and although I am studying adult nursing, due to previous experience, I have an interest to broaden my knowledge on learning disabilities and mental health nursing as there is an expectation and professional requirement, set out in the NMC standards of competence, that nurses from all fields of nursing are able to respond to the holistic needs of all patients and service users (Trenoweth et al, 2011). I also plan to look in more detail about other learning styles. As a reflector, I like to sit back and listen to the opinions of others, however as a nurse I know that being able to think quickly on my feet and come to a decision fast is an important skill to have. I believe I am able to use my own initiative, but I can sometimes struggle to complete a task if I am not able to prepare for it and this is something I need to work
