Nursing Practice

The purpose of this discussion board is to discuss the definition of the scope of nursing practice. Defining the nurse's scope of practice is not easily done in a few words. There are scope and standards of practice for every nursing specialty and from many different organizations. However, The American Nurses Association (2010) defines the scope of nursing practice as avocation for all members involved in care, as well as, conservation and advancement to always improve overall health and well-being. This includes to prevent any further harm, illness, or hardship ( p.1).
To compare, Ohio's nursing law to define the nurse's scope of practice is a little different, but much the same. Nursing is defined as giving care to individuals that require the proper understanding, expertise, and judgement from all aspects of nursing sciences. This includes many actions from educating, assessing, and delegating. Utilizing skills learned and observing outcomes helps nurses contribute to the implementation of the nursing process (Ohio Board of Nursing, 2015, p.1). Every aspect of nursing is important and must be kept in mind while practicing within your scope throughout your career.

Nurses need to always be focused and use their skills and knowledge when providing care to the best of their ability. Advocation for the patient, families, and community is very important. All nurses need to be aware and knowledgeable of their own nurse practice acts in each state to properly follow all laws and standards of care. Without this knowledge, inadequate care can be given, and loss of the nursing license that took much time and dedication to receive may occur.
