A Profession: A Personal Statement Of Purpose

Improved Essays
Looking as “almost impossible goal”, I started this path when I was 17 years old. Medicine, a dreaded and admired profession. A job that requires uniquely indescribable qualities and skills. A responsibility that involves sacrifices. I 'm so pleased to say that Venezuela trains one of the most talented physicians who after studying hard for tests are exposed to knowledge through daily, direct contact with patients and their diseases. As a developing country, we don’t count on the best technology and resources but our clinical knowledge is solid and I’ll be always thankful for that. After being exposed to the different areas of medicine, I concluded that my tendency is essentially clinic. I feel passion to all the systems that keep our complicated …show more content…
On the other hand, I didn 't want to start the pediatrics rotation, because I had to face 2 different type of patients, the little sick kids and their parents, which I cannot deny scared me and made me feel anxious. It 's challenging to perform a good physical exam on a weepy restless kid and besides to satisfied his parents expectation. However, I conquered this fear after spending so many long hours in the inpatient service presenting complicated clinical cases to the demanding attendings. 3 months later of being every day even weekends from 7 am to 5 pm something magical torn my thoughts. Despite going every day to the same place and deal with the same type of patient I was happy. I felt productive and didn 't care about feeling tired. Something I couldn’t imagine happened[ I felt in love with Pediatrics at my 22 years of age. In the beginning, it was hard to get used to the cryness, hyperactivity and even to the most boisterous temper tantrums. But only the fact of listening to all those funny crazy adventures and stories full of imagination and action, it is worth the effort. In a child 's world, there 's no space for problems, suffering or sickness. They don 't want to be sick and trapped in the walls of a hospital. However with their magic smiles while playing they make this sad place full of joy and colors. No matter the circumstances their ability to make life easier is priceless. I deeply admire their innocence, honesty, and persuasiveness. Now I consider them the best patients in whose hands is our future as a

I was lying asleep on a cot at 6AM when suddenly a “cabin” of four children were jumping all over me, excited to start yet another day at Camp Dragonfly Forest. I have had the best job in the world for the previous two summers, working at a nonprofit camp for kids with specific medical needs. Every week is something different, ranging from developmental disorders like 22Q chromosomal disorder and autism, to physical disorders like persistent asthma, sickle cell anemia, and hemophilia. Camp Dragonfly Forest levels the playing field for these kids and gives them the opportunity to have the same camp experience as “normal” children that they cannot have elsewhere. So for six weeks for the past two summers, I have been the goofiest, most energetic, oversized child for the sake of getting kids to feel comfortable away from home.…

A part of me has always been drawn to children. Perhaps this is due to my mom and sister being teachers at the Middle School and hearing their experiences that I feel compelled to work with children. In spite of this proclivity I have had towards pediatrics and the wonderful experiences I had with children in the past, I have come to realize that a career I cannot imagine a career without treating both adults and kids. A residency program that combines both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics will fuel my passion for medicine while allowing me the flexibility to treat both populations across a wide range of disease processes. For me, the decision to go to Ireland for medical school was an easy one.…

The Story of My Search February 2012 was one of the lowest points of my life, but it was also one of the highest points as well. During this time, I was in LeBonheur’s Children Hospital on the verge of death. Every day was the same routine with same inconsiderate people that never took my feelings into consideration. 1) Briefly describe your exposure to medicine As the daughter of a pediatrician, the medical field has surrounded me my entire life. However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. My internship at a medical examiner’s office exposed me to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the medical causes of death. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras.…

The field is always growing and changing and I yearn to undertake in this lifetime of learning. I find it so exciting that one day I can serve people by improving their health and do so using cutting-edge technologies, some which may have yet to be invented. I may not be able to change the world on the whole, but small actions can have a big influence. I look forward to creating a positive impact on a personal level, treating holistically and compassionately, as this is a career path that calls for an understanding of the human experience as much as it does an understanding of the human body. It is this interplay of science and service that makes medicine so unique, so compelling, and so fit a profession for me to…
