The paper discusses why having an understanding of learning theory and learning styles is important for my career in nursing. A learning style focus on how persons prefer to learn in order to improve their learning abilities knowledge and skills. Keefe (1979) has described learning style as the composition of affective, cognitive, and psychological behavior that act as a pointer of how a person perceives something, interacts with others, and responds to the environment of learning. Thus, a learning theory and style assist in absorption, retention, and procession of the content information. Thus, learning is a process used to create knowledge based on experiences. Fleming (2001) has defined learning style as a person’s characteristics and desired ways used to gather, organize, and think about information. To Honey (2006), learning styles are products of personal learning, inclusive of all what we know, things we do, things we believe in, and subjects we have learnt. Therefore, each individual has different learning styles and approach that is used to learn something new. On the other hand, a learning theory provides a framework that allows people to learn. The most common learning theory is the Experiential Learning Theory (ELT). Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) is used to provide a holistic model needed for the learning process and adult development. For instance, based on the Honey and Mumford's (1986) model of learning styles, I consider myself as an activist because I have come to realize the best way learn and apply in the health care setting. As an activist, I endeavor to participate in new experiences, act based on available facts, and consider the outcomes of my actions later (Pritchard 2013). The most memorable learning moments were when faced with challenges, new experiences, opportunities, and the ability to lead a group. Without learning styles for nursing, it could have been quite challenging on my side with regard to reflecting on a situation involving thinking and learning so as to generate a better outcome. As noted by O'Carroll and Park (2007), reflection is key learning as it acts as a tool for practice in nursing. Therefore, I am expected as a nurse to reflect at times founded on the type of care provided. Also, learning styles are important in helping to reflect on any areas that require improvement to ensure that right care is provided to the right patients based on the set a good standard of
