In this essay, leadership will be defined and critically analysed, discussing the various leadership styles and how these different leadership styles affect staff retention, graduate Registered Nurses (RN) and the implications for patient care. The Australian health care system not only faces financial restraint, but also a shortage of health care professionals, in particular nurses (6). Nursing management is a challenging and difficult task during these times of dramatic organisational change (2), as nursing is a people-orientated profession which highlights humanism, that influences leadership style (2).
It is essential to understand the difference between leadership and management, as they are often used interchangeably (28). Management may be defined as the planning and organisation of health care delivery which is an organisational appointed role, whereas Leadership is defined as the ability to negotiate a change process by motivating and supporting others to achieve a mutual goal.

Nursing leaders are functional at all stages of their careers, as well as different levels within organisations, from clinical to administrative roles (6). Clinical leadership demonstrates mentorship, supervision, inspiration to others and support of colleagues (6). There is a connection between nurse managers and their leadership styles (2). There are different types of leaders and leadership styles, these styles can have positive and negative impacts on health care and nursing as a profession (3). Organisations have different beliefs and value systems that shape and form the mission of the organisation, influencing leadership styles (6). Leadership is recognised as a focal point in achieving the change necessary to meet organisational goals, staff retention and quality patient care
