BSN level programs usually only have one or two leadership courses whereas an MSN program would have more. Leadership development programs can also be very influential on leadership style. Leadership competencies should be developed by the healthcare facility, researcher, and educator to improve the leadership of the facility as a whole. Swearingen (2009) discusses the program that was developed in her hospital. The programs classes were determined by the experience of the leader and went from novice up to expert. The classes focused on team building, leadership skills, advanced skills, strategy-based skills, etc. In less than 2 years there were already significant outcomes. In some units there was as big as a 24% improvement in retention rates.
