Power
I have thought about this discussion post for the last week. I have tried to identify the one person that I consider having the assets that I consider vital to a nurse leadership position. Over the years, I have had numerous leaders, both informal and managerial. Jill is the director of the surgical services at the hospital. She has worked for the hospital for many years and has functioned in different capacities. Her leadership journey began greater than ten years ago when Jill became the clinical leader of the progressive care unit. Since that time she has elevated her status professionally and educationally. Direct and indirect reports refer to her for her clinical expertise, this is an example of expert power; her position, director of surgical services, is a case of legitimate, also known as positional power (Marquis & Huston, 2015). What makes her a good leader is her style of leadership. She is patient and staff focused. She listens to others and can quickly and calmly solve problems. Staff experience a sense of safety and are comfortable speaking with her about issues, and do not feel threatened or coerced when coached. They are empowered and encouraged to do their best every day for the betterment of the community. People listen to her when she speaks because they know she holds the truth. Jill’s staff eagerly complies with expectations and follow guidelines. Jill is an example of referent power and charismatic power. Charismatic power relates to the individual’s ability to lead others and obtain results from their followers because of who they are as a person, not who they know and the power they gain from others (Marquis & Huston,
