1.Using the Person, Environment, Occupation model please answer each separately a. Person- who are the clients receiving services at your fieldwork site (age group, types of dx, etc.) My fieldwork site that I have been observing is an Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. At my work-site, clients who are receiving services are those who need long-term care, had a stroke, organ failure, dementia, amputation, brain tumor, multiple sclerosis, bone fractures, schizophrenia, etc. So far, patients that I have observed have ranged in age from 40s to 90s. I observed total eight patients and some of them were in different age group and some had different diagnoses. It offers medical, nursing service for people with severe illnesses or disabilities twenty-four hours a day. It also provides both short- term rehabilitation and long-term care. The staff provides therapeutic environment with a focus on adapting a systematic approach to meet the specific demands of each individual patient. There are four units at the site and those are Alzheimer, stroke, dementia, and recovering unit from various traumas and illness. Essex Park Rehab and Nursing Center have pleasant surroundings, positive, and homelike environment. On my first visit, I was surprised to see the size of this building. It was very spacious, calm, and clean. I didn't think of it to be like this. The gym is really big and has different types of equipment and activities for specific needs. There are several activities and given choices to patients to choose each day. I enjoyed that patient has some control over their choices. They can opt to perform different activities. Alzheimer unit can be noisy sometimes due to the patients walking on the floor and talking to each other. They love to walk and talk instead of resting in their room and also they are all under maximum supervision; For instance, key card required to access elevators and to access stairwells you need to enter a passcode. Activities offered to clients are motivated and beneficial. Up to now, I have seen several activities and treatments out of all and I will be partaking those. The first activity I observed was ADL’s, such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and toilet hygiene. Another activity I saw was stationary bike exercise. This provided to maintain and develop upper/ lower body strength. An interesting Parallel bars activity performed to help patients regain balance and independence, muscle strength, range of motion, as they learn to walk again. Additional activities like learning to walk with the help of a walker and learning to operate a wheelchair. To maintain upper extremity strength for wheelchair patients, rickshaw rehab therapeutic exercise provided and so more. Also, fun activities offered to patients at this facility. Such as, playing games like tic tac toe, playing with balloons, and so on Treatments that I observed were electrical stimulation and diathermy. Electrical stimulation treatment on patients are to reduce pain and diathermy treatment to heal wounds and also to bring down pain. 2. What are your initial impressions? Is this what you expected OT to be, if not, how is it different? My first impression was to treat patients by giving therapeutic exercise activities in the gym.
