In this world and in our history, we have seen the impact that opposition against the norm has either caused chaos or a positive change to occur. In many circumstances, had it not been for those going against the norm and seeking justice and fairness, our country would not be as far as it is now. Through opposition, we see that flowers can go through concretes and bloom. The role of nurses evolving into nurse practitioners has faced many oppositions and setbacks since it first initiated by Florence Nightingale. In the 50 years that the nurse practitioner role has been utilized and implemented not only in our country, but others countries have seen the positive impact that nurse practitioners have on healthcare and patients. Though the roles of nurse practitioners have hit some opposition and lash back by medical organizations, in the 50 years nurse practitioners have been able to help change healthcare as a whole. Many nurses have set the forefront for change in the sector of healthcare such as Loretta Ford. With her reactiveness and determination for change she was a co-founder in developing one of the first nurse practitioner programs in the country. To be qualified, the nurse practitioner must meet certain criteria in order to provide care by diagnosing, prescribing, and implementing care. Certain accrediting bodies such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners has developed certain common core competencies that nurse practitioners must achieve. These core competencies set the tone for what is acceptable in care. Without proper credentialing and certifications healthcare would not be set at such high standards. Nurse Practitioners certified by AANPCP are referred to as Certificants. The period of certification is 5-years. Certification expires automatically at the end of the certification period unless renewed. Certificants must maintain their certification and must not allow it to lapse to remain certified and to use the NP-C credential earned. AANPCP’s certification and recertification programs are accredited by the ABSNC of the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS), formerly known as the ABNS Accreditation Council. ABNS is the only national peer review program for professional specialty nursing certification. Accreditation by ABSNC demonstrates AANPCP’s compliance with the ABSNC Accreditation Standards, the highest quality standards available in the industry for specialty nursing certification programs.
