Along with most healthcare professions, it is essential to have continuing education (CE) credits for that particular field, and in most cases it is mandatory. Continuing education for a CRNA includes several hours of extra training and in some cases an exam. This is all normally done during the recertification period. “Forty hours of approved CE credit must be earned within the 2 year period prior to the nurse anesthetist’s upcoming recertification date or, if the applicant’s recertification period is shorter than 2 years, within the shortened period prior to the applicant’s upcoming recertification date” (Continuing 14). The credits do not have to be earned at a specific time as long as it is done during the recertification period. It is possible that if one earns CE credits outside of the recertification period they will carry over to the next period. Continuing education is …show more content…
Another factor when determining the salary may be in the amount of population in the area. The median annual wage of a nurse anesthetist was last recorded in May of 2012. Most advanced practice nurses earned an annual salary of $96,460, which included nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists. “The lowest 10 percent earned less than $66,330, and the top 10 percent earned more than $161,030” (“Nurse”). Typically a CRNA will start out with a base pay of $148,160 per year. A CRNA’s salary may differ according to the type of facility he or she may work in. A nurse anesthetist that works in a hospital would make more than one that works under a physician at a private practice. According to the wages recorded in May of 2012, wages for APRNs like nurse anesthetists are the best in a hospital setting, and the worst recorded was at colleges, universities, and professional schools (“Nurse”).
