After staying with my friend over Thanksgiving, we had to head back home and meet my parents. We were going to meet them part way, so they did not have to drive as far. From State College, where my friend and I were, to Slippery Rock, where I live, is 142 miles. My parents left at 11:15 a.m., while we left a few minutes later, at 11:24 a.m. My parents were going 67 miles per hour, while we were travelling at a rate of 71 miles per hour. Knowing this, I figured we would meet my parents at 12:22 p.m., 68 miles from State College, and 74 miles from Slippery Rock.. The solution of this equation was 1.11 hours, so I plugged it back into the equation, for “h”, to see how long each of us travelled. My parents travelled for 1.11 hours, while we only travelled 0.96 hours, since to get the actual hours you had to subtract 0.15 from “h”. Since we left at 11:24 a.m., I added on 58 minutes, or 0.96 hours, the time travelled, and found that we would meet my parents at 12:22 p.m. To figure out how far we travelled, I plugged the hours travelled back into the equation. This being said I multiplied 71 mi/hr times 0.96 hours to get 68 miles travelled from State College, and I also multiplied 67 mi/hr times 1.11 hours to get 74 miles from Slippery Rock.
