Communication is key, regardless of where you work. Communication can be between people or a computer communicating data to a person. When obtaining data from a computer, people want to be able to trust the data that they are receiving and that none of the packets got lost somewhere along the way. Packets are units of data that are routed between an origin and a destination on the Internet. Networks use Ethernet cables, called Category (more commonly referred to as CAT) cables to send packets to one another. The cables are generally reliable for transmission, but as with everything, things happen unexpectedly and some packets end up getting lost. Packet loss occurs when there is a malfunction in transmission and packets do not arrive at their destination.
In a world that is heavily reliant on sending and receiving information using technology, it is imperative to keep that technology up to date. …show more content…
I will gather quantitative data based on the following questions: What is each type of CAT cable best suited for? How can replacing one type of CAT cable with another solve a specific problem? I will be looking at the different types of CAT cables that are used at C.W. Matthews to send and receive information. I will study the CATs in the same types of situations in order to identify which types of cables perform the most reliably in each situation. I will be manipulating cable type (CAT5 and 6), cable length (distance of transmission), and Unshielded Twisted Pairs(UTP)/ Shielded Twisted Pairs(STP). Unshielded Twisted Pairs are defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE) as “an electrically conducting cable, comprising one or more pairs, none of which are shielded” (IEEE, 2015). Shielded Twisted Pairs and are defined as “an electrically conducting cable, comprising one or more elements, each of which is individually shielded” (IEEE,
