1. Describe the purpose for using aseptic technique in collecting specimens Aseptic technique is used to prevent contamination of specimens by pathogenic organisms. The goal of maintaining asepsis is to not introduce any other organisms to the patient and prevent the spread of any organisms the patient may be carrying. Certain practices are used to help decrease this from occurring including cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. Aseptic technique is an important process to prevent the spread of infection and diseases in the clinical setting (Hauswirth & Sherk). One way I have used this knowledge in a clinical setting is by maintaining aseptic technique when collecting specimens including wound and vaginal cultures. This prevents contamination of the collected …show more content…
Describe the medical purpose of culturing organisms
The medical purpose of culturing organisms is to identify the type of organism that is infecting the patient so that the patient can be treated more effectively. The specific procedure used depends on where the specimen is being collected from. All involve cleaning the given site and collecting a small portion of blood, drainage, or tissue. This specimen is then sent to lab where it is processed and watched to see if any organisms grow. Any growth that results in a disease causing organism is then stained and test to identify which antibiotics will work for treatment (Levy, 2013).
One example of this being applied to in my every day practice again applies to Group B Strep. GBS cultures are done routinely on all pregnant women at 36 weeks gestation. A specimen is collected from the vaginal/rectal area and sent to lab for growth. By knowing if a patient carries this normal flora in their birth canal, I can treat the laboring mom in order to decrease the risk of her newborn contracting a GBS infection during the birthing process.
