Species information
2a. Description and identification Family: The family Amphiumidae consists of three separate species of “eel” like animals separated by the number of toes that are present on the animal. These animals are nocturnal, as well as almost completely aquatic. The two pairs of limbs that these animals posses are small in proportion to the body, and are not incredibly useful. This family of animals has a dark brown or black dorsum with either a dark gray, light gray, or brown/black ventor. Amphiumidaes normally have a long body that can measure up to 30+ inches. However, there are exceptions with dwarf Amhiumas. These animals are distributed throughout the southeastern

Habits: Two-toed amphiumas are aquatic and nocturnal animals. However, these animals can move over land in swamps in the rain. They typically hide under cover be it mud or underwater debris with their head sticking out. These animals will lie and wait in these hiding places for prey to pass, and when it does they are known to bite fairly aggressively. The two-toed amphiuma lays its eggs near the waters edge, or even underground (Conant and Collins 1998).

2c. Habitat: The two-toed amphiuma is found throughout the southeastern United States, however mainly closer to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. These animals can be found in swamps, streams, ponds, ditches, and many other aquatic habitats. I these habitats they either create a “lair” out of mud to hide in, or they find debris underwater (Conant and Collins 1998).

2d. Foods: The two-toed amphiuma has been known to eat small fish, crustaceans, mollusks, snakes and other smaller reptiles, as well as smaller amphiumas (Conant and Collins

Most people, understandably, find it difficult to differentiate a frog from a toad. They normally mix them up due to their similar appearances. Although they certainly look similar, the similarities mostly end there, as frogs and toads are very different animals. Frogs are found in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Frogs have smooth wet skin, live most of the time in or near water, and sport numerous unusual colors for their large, bulging eyes, including brown, silver, green, gold, and red.…

Newts are semi-aquatic amphibians with tails (Brockes 2005) that are of the family Salamandridea. All newts are salamanders, but not all salamanders are newts. I will be observing specifically California Newts (Taricha torosa) and Rough-Skinned Newts (Taricha granulosa), which are both commonly found in the Northern California Area. Each can also be found in the UC Botanical Garden’s Japanese Pool, which is where I will be observing them. The two species are very close genetically and are able to form hybrids, although it seems to be extremely rare in nature (Davis and Twitty 1964).…

Alligators are very large reptiles, with males growing up to 4.5 meters in length. The female Alligator tends to be slightly smaller, with a total body and tail length of between 3 and 3.5 meters. The Chinese Alligator is a much smaller animal, almost half the length of a female American Alligator. Alligators have an armor-plated body that varies in color from yellow, to green, to brown, finally turning almost completely black in old age. The tail of the Alligator is incredibly muscular and is used to propel the animals when it is in the water.…

Frogs and toads are known as Anurans. Anurans represent the most diverse, and widespread of the three existent amphibian species. Anurans can be found throughout the world. Frogs can be spotted in urban areas and gardens. However, it is rare for the anurans to be seen in polar regions, as well as some oceanic islands and extremely xeric deserts, but anuran diversity is greatest in the tropical areas (Heying, 2003).…

My school has a three week term devoted to travel and exploration called “Field Academy.” I have, every year, designed and undertaken a three week experiential learning project related to animals and the environment. Since I’ve always been fascinated with evolution and speciation, I knew I had to study the anoles lizards. They are the perfect genus to study because of the isolated islands of the Caribbean they live on. The anoles lizards originated from South America about 40 million years ago.…

    Subterranean Ecosystems

Most subterranean ecosystems are characterized by temporal and spatial patchiness of food because of lack of autotrophic production and intermittent allochthonous input (Hervant et.al, 1997; Huppop, 1985). However, some subterranean communities such as, bat caves with guano production, Appalachian caves (Culver and Poulson,1971) with great allochthonous inputs, and Frasassi caves (Porter et. al,2009) with chemoautotrophic production are not limited by food supplies. Therefore, if caves are not food limited, troglobitic amphipods have same metabolic turnover rate as their epigean counterparts (Culver and Poulson, 1971). Periods of low food supplies are experienced by most hypogean and epigean organisms in their environment during which the…
