The school is ran on a majority of the principles and guidelines found on the National Association for the Education of Young Children organization website. “NAEYC is the gold standard for early childhood programs across the country. Families of young children who attend NAEYC accredited programs can be confident that they deliver the highest quality care and education” (NAEYC). There are eleven teachers in the school that either teach pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, or special education. “A lot of teachers are new to early childhood and are learning everyday” (Vanderbeek). While others, she says, have been teaching for decades. “ All teachers, regardless of how long they have been teaching, care tremendously for their students” (Vanderbeek). The custodians are also very important at this school as the children, ages three to six, can make a big mess in a short amount of time. Volunteers are a big part of what makes the school run smoothly. “Without volunteers, it would be awful hard to have centers and control the class”. (Vanderbeek). Classes go by fast, as the school is in session from 8:10 to 1:10. Some classes are bigger than others but, the maximum number of students a kindergarten class can have is twenty while the pre-kindergarten classes can have a maximum of sixteen students. Ms. Vanderbeek teaches the only pre-kindergarten or three year old class at the school. Ms. Vanderbeek’s class is an “english language learner” class or E.L.L., meaning that many of her students also speak another language at home.
