Even though Northern Finland is in the Arctic circle the climate of the whole country is not as bad as one may think. In fact most of the country is about the same on average as northern united States and Canada. The northen part of Finalnd has such generally mild weather is do to currents from the Gulf Sea bringing warmer weather. It was about the time after the last brutal ice age when natives started to settle on this vast piece of land. At the time their settled lives were peaceful, but like most countries this didn’t stay the same for very long. Sweden and Russia were in a disagreement about religion and poor Finland was soon to be caught in the middle. Sweden made the first move and sent Catholic missionaries over to Finland to convert more people and soon craved more power. In 1157 Sweden took over and renamed Finland Österland (er- ster- land) which means Land To the East. The Finns were alarmed and many still practiced their Lutheran religion and were still somewhat grateful for Sweden. However, not only did Sweden want Finland but so did other countries.
