The Agriculture industry is filled with a variety of interest groups that on a day-to-day basis seek to better the industries they represent. The meat industry has become one of the fastest growing industries in recent years with beef and chicken being the lead contenders, demonstrated by figure 1. The majority of meat and poultry producers seek the help of interest groups in order to have a source of information and representation. The North American Meat Institute represents the interest of companies that process approximately 95 percent of red meat, and 70 percent of the turkey products within the United States (American Meat Institute). The North American Meat Institute, originally called the American Meat Packers Association, was founded in 1906 in Chicago, Illinois. One of the main goals of the organization is to educate, and provide services that allow companies to be able to provide safe and healthy foods on a world wide scale. One of the many ways in which they achieve this is by having specialized committees. This allows them to be much more detailed when it comes to dealing with issues in that sector. Aside from having committees, NAMI as well conducts research. This allows them to be able to find solutions to problems, and be able to create innovative technology as well. In recent years, the organization conducted a research that has changed the way cattle is fed and taken care of. In 2002 the organization conducted research on a new feed ingredient that contained probiotics. Thanks to their research they were able to reduce the presence of E. coli in live cattle (American Meat Institute).
