Go to a public place such as a restaurant, the mall, a park, or a common area at one of the CTC campuses where students hang out in between classes. Observe two people engaged in an extended conversation. You should be close enough to observe them well, but not close enough to hear what they are saying. (They should NOT be people you already know). Carefully observe their interaction, with the goal of answering the questions below.
Your answers should be very detailed, not just with descriptions of what you see, but also using terminology and concepts from Chapter 6. You should write at least a paragraph for each answer. Be sure to carefully check your typing for errors before submitting to the …show more content…
Eye Contact: How direct is their eye contact? How prolonged is it? Does one or the other frequently look away? Is either one (or both) looking at something else, such as a cell phone? What can you tell about their relationship or the nature of their conversation based on their eye contact?
The two females engaged in slight eye contact due to where the conversation was located- in a restaurant. Depending on the objects around them, the eye contact was kept to a maximum of 6 seconds. The atmosphere was busy with distracting stimuli such as the pizza they were eating and their telephones. There were no cultural variables between the girls that could have hindered the eye contact. They were very comfortable with each other and engaged in conversation with short bursts of eye contact when necessary.

They seemed comfortable with each other. One of them did not seem more dominant than the other, symbolizing that they were each approximately the same age and same education level, among other factors. Female A was holding her left leg to her chest as if to prop her head up while looking at her phone. Her feet were pointing towards Female B. It was not possible to see Female B’s legs or feet at the time. None of the participants wanted to leave the conversation based on where they were seated; they had come into this willingly.
6. Touch: Is there any physical contact between the two – hand on shoulder, fist bump, etc. What does this (or lack of it) tell you about their relationship?
There was no physical contact at the time that I was watching the two. They were sitting across from each other at a booth. Each of the females was on their phones, including the apparent sister who was abnormally quiet during dinner. If they did end up touching, I believe it would be a friendship touch based on the other clues.
7. Object display: Look at what each person is wearing – what clues do you have about the identity/interests/culture of each person, based on clothing, hair, and other outward appearances? What message do you believe each person is intending to send by how he/she
