Categories of nonverbal communication can be classified as: facial expressions, head movements, hand and arm gestures, physical space, touching, eye contact, and physical postures.
Facial expressions
• In most cultures, smiling is a sign of happiness but it can also shows other emotions. For example some chinese may smile when they are discussing something sad or uncomfortable.
• Winking has a very different meaning in different cultures. Some Latin Americans wink as a romantic or sexual invitation. Nigerian may wink when they want their children to leave the room. Many Chinese thinks winking is to be rude.
• In Hong Kong, it is not good to blink one’s eyes which is easily recognized because this may be consider as a sign of boredom …show more content…
• In early relationship physical contacts make Chinese uncomfortable. Many chinese adopt a western greet like hand shake for westerns. • People of Argentina reflect their challenge or anger by tapping their fingers on hips.
Eye Contact
• In some cultures the direct contact of eyes is a sign of inappropriate gesture or taking as disrespect but in other cultures they are refusing that making direct contact of eyes is disrespected.
• To watch into adult eyes continuously is considered as a disrespectful act in Ghana.
• In some places of America, it is treated good to do eye contact in business and social situations.
• There are so many cultures where eye contact is treated disrespectful like Asians, Hispanic and middle eastern. On the other hand it is not taking negatively if person is not doing eye contact during conversation.
