An example of how nonverbal signals in a conflict situation are used to convey emotions and how people tend to believe nonverbal signals over verbal is a study done Marnin Heisel and Myriam Mongrain. It showed that when in a relationship between a woman and a man when they are in engaged in trying to resolve a conflict, women who have conflicting positive and negative emotions try to control their verbal communication with their partner (2004). When it comes to their nonverbal facial expressions they cannot hide the negative emotions they feel (Heisel & Mongrain, 2004). When the men in the couple saw the negative expressions it caused them to have increased levels of dysphoria and anxiety (Heisal & Mongrain).
