In 1965, Duke University created the first Physician Assistant Program led by Dr. Eugene Stead. Dr. Stead based the curriculum on his first hand knowledge and also based the curriculum on a more fast tracked medical school. Also during the 1990’s the majority of applicants and graduates became women. Now, The Affordable Care Act, is expected to double the need for Physician Assistants. In 2013, the estimated job growth for Physician Assistants was 30%. In 2010 there were approximately 80,000 certified Physician Assistants and over the next five years the profession grew 35.9% to around 108,000 certified Physician Assistants. The Physician Assistant career is growing and is expected to grow especially now as baby boomers are growing
