Although all these theories are valuable to healthcare organizations, I have ranked them according to level of importance, based on my perception. The most important non-nursing theory is healthy work environment. Maslow’s Hierarchy, empowerment theory, and chaos theory are the next three theories going down the line of importance. Then, change, quality improvement, and systems theory are the last three, in order of importance. My rationale behind the ranking is that before one can be productive and provide quality care, one must be given an environment to do so. The employee must be taken care of first, in order to be able to care for another. They must feel safe and secure, have their basic needs met, and given the support and encouragement to do the tasks a hand. The importance of this is not recognized, until it no longer exists where you work. Without a healthy work environment, I would not be able to provide the type of care I want to my patients. Providing care, is not just about being given the right physical tools, but the team to work beside you and assist when needed. It is having enough staff, so that you are not bogged down by so many patients, that no one gets the proper care. It is nice to receive recognition and give recognition, not just from superiors, but also from fellow nurses on the floor. All of this gives strength and motivation to perform the job another day and to be the best nurse.
Non-nursing theories play an important role in nursing, just as important as nursing theories. Without these theories, nurses would not be given the opportunity to grow, learn, and effectively work in a healthcare organization. These theories help to assure nurses are provided with the means to provide the best, quality patient care. It takes everyone in a healthcare organization to assure goals are
