Non-Fraternization is a strict policy that is put in place for many work places as well the service members in the military. The Secretary of Defense first created the policy on July 29, 1998. According to the Army Study Guide, “The policy strictly prohibited personal relationships such as dating, shared living accommodations, engaging in intimate or sexual relations, business enterprises, commercial solicitations, gambling and borrowing between officer and enlisted regardless of their service. This policy is put in place to strengthen unification within the military. It also encourages strong discipline within the unit as well as the cohesion of all service members. However, without the non-fraternization policy, it can have an affect on morale as well as one’s perception on things. This policy helps prevent favoritism in a work place as well as the military setting. “Non-fraternization policies minimize the perception of favoritism. Even if a member of a relationship is attempting scrupulously to be fair and objective, other employees may perceive favoritism toward the individual with whom she/he is involved.” (Dorsey, & Whitney, 2008). Since order is such a vital part of the army standard, it is important to strengthen the order or it will become ineffective.
