Nolan's 'Words Their Way Inventory'

Improved Essays
Words Their Way Inventory - Primary (1-3), Elementary (1-6) or Upper Level (5-8):
I used the upper level (5-8) list. Nolan scored 70/99 and his spelling stage is late syllables and affixes/ early derivational relations. The spelling inventory showed that Nolan uses blends and digraphs 5/5, vowels 9/9, complex consonants 7/7, inflected endings and syllable juncture 7/8, correctly. Nolan uses but confuses unaccented final syllables 7/9 and affixes 7/10. The features that seemed to be absent were; reduced vowels in unaccented syllables 3/7, Greek and Latin elements 4/7, and assimilated prefixes 3/6.

As I read through the tale I noticed many grammatical mistakes but beyond that I noticed the level of creativity that Nolan put into this tale. Nolan mentions, dragons and unicorns and evil princes and touches every element a fairytale has. Although Mrs. Finster does not grade their writing for anything other than completion I believe Nolan did an extraordinary job with this writing piece. I can tell he enjoyed writing it as well because there are bits and pieces of his humor throughout the tale, for example the story ended with, “THE END...or is it...yeah, it actually is”. The next piece of writing was the piece that took up most of my time in the field. The class was to write an opinion piece based on whether they were pro zoos or against zoos. In the beginning, Nolan stated that he was against zoos. For two weeks Nolan read through articles both pro and con, and highlighted important information at the end he was to decide which of the two he was going to write about. Nolan stood his position and wrote against zoos, he did a great job using facts he found from the text but there were minor grammatical errors that I know may have been fixed if he had time to re-read his work at the end. Overall both writing pieces relate to other assessments I’ve administered in the way he chose to write and in what he chose to write

A student’s ability to use knowledge of sound/letter correspondences to decode words, determines his or her ability to read individual words. Knowing the skills that the students possess will assist the teacher in selecting reading tasks that offer the most effective reinforcement of those phonics skills.…

S’niya, a fourth-grade student at Miramar Elementary School, was given four assessments from a Scholastic resource packet that helps to determine what level of reading a student is currently achieving. The Scholastic resource assessments allow a teacher to establish an idea of the student’s reading proficiency and also helps to conclude what sort of instructional plan would best suit the needs of each individual student. With the Clinical Educator’s discretion, S’niya was assigned to complete a third-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment, and a fourth-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment. Similar to before, she did excellent on initial consonants, short vowels, diagraphs, and blends. However, she missed one on her final consonants. The word that I had given Kassidy was “wait” she spelled it “waite.” Once I scored the common long vowels and other vowels, it was evident to me that, within word pattern, middle to late, was her spelling stage. She scored a four out of seven each of the sections.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, dubbed the brothers Grimm, are credited as the authors of popular fairy tales loved by children and shared by adults today. Both were born in Hanau, Germany, in the years of 1785 and 1786. With the death of their father, followed by a drop in family income, their mother pushed them to study law and philology at the University of Marburg. There, the brothers adopted an interest in medieval German literature and pursued a new career, in addition to their studies. When France occupied the German territories, Jacob was recommended as a librarian to the royal public library of the King and Queen of Westphalia, and Wilhelm as his assistant.…

For my writing assignment I chose “My Beloved Brontosaurus”. This was such an interesting read to me because I feel as if he put so much effort and thought into it. For example he starts off the book by saying, “From the time I was a toddler, I desperately wanted to meet the gigantic herbivore.” He has had this interest clearly since he was a child and he goes into such depth about it. Many people feel otherwise as well.…
