I used the upper level (5-8) list. Nolan scored 70/99 and his spelling stage is late syllables and affixes/ early derivational relations. The spelling inventory showed that Nolan uses blends and digraphs 5/5, vowels 9/9, complex consonants 7/7, inflected endings and syllable juncture 7/8, correctly. Nolan uses but confuses unaccented final syllables 7/9 and affixes 7/10. The features that seemed to be absent were; reduced vowels in unaccented syllables 3/7, Greek and Latin elements 4/7, and assimilated prefixes 3/6.

As I read through the tale I noticed many grammatical mistakes but beyond that I noticed the level of creativity that Nolan put into this tale. Nolan mentions, dragons and unicorns and evil princes and touches every element a fairytale has. Although Mrs. Finster does not grade their writing for anything other than completion I believe Nolan did an extraordinary job with this writing piece. I can tell he enjoyed writing it as well because there are bits and pieces of his humor throughout the tale, for example the story ended with, “THE END...or is it...yeah, it actually is”. The next piece of writing was the piece that took up most of my time in the field. The class was to write an opinion piece based on whether they were pro zoos or against zoos. In the beginning, Nolan stated that he was against zoos. For two weeks Nolan read through articles both pro and con, and highlighted important information at the end he was to decide which of the two he was going to write about. Nolan stood his position and wrote against zoos, he did a great job using facts he found from the text but there were minor grammatical errors that I know may have been fixed if he had time to re-read his work at the end. Overall both writing pieces relate to other assessments I’ve administered in the way he chose to write and in what he chose to write
