On last Friday evening, the concert began at 7 pm and ended at almost 9 pm. Unfortunately, Nocturne didn’t offer a playlist that night nor on their website, and as a beginner in Jazz, sadly I wasn’t able to recognize the specific songs they were playing. However, I did get a sense of their style during the concert.
As the tenor saxophonist, Oxman’s style is very distinctive. His tone is clear and lively at most of the time, but can also have rich and dense texture during the other part. Also, as a bandleader, Oxman pays lots of attention on his companies, including making room for them on the stage during the solos. During the performance of the Keith Oxman Quartet, most of them are eating and drinking while chatting with their companies. The volume of their voice is not so loud to cover the music, but still, very distracting. In fact, most of them are not even paying attention to the music. In my opinion, the Keith Oxman Quartet deserves much more respect than they actually get during their performance. I’m sad that how well prepared the Nocturne jazz club and the band are, comparing to the disrespect and ignoring from the audience.
