This test is performed on organisms to see if it has the enzymes to reduce the Nitrate to Nitrite. To run the test, it will require using two colorless chemicals (so make sure you are paying attention) that will either change the color of the organism by the interaction of the new chemicals with the enzymes found in the unknown organism. So, if the organism has the capability to reduce the nitrate to nitrite the solution in the test tube will turn red almost immediately and the organism is positive. if there is no color change that is noted then moving on to the confirmation test where two more chemicals are added to the solution in the test tube to see if there is any color change.
