Elie Wiesel started off as a fourteen year old kid. He lived in Sighet, Transylvania. When it was Passover, a Jewish holiday, the persecution of the Jewish people began. Jews were not allowed to leave their homes for three days and they had to wear a yellow star. They later had to be crowded into two ghettos.
Even though they were forced to live in the ghettos, they lived their normal lives with no concern. One day, Elie's father was summoned to a meeting with the Jewish council. He returns with news that they had to be deported to camps. Elie and his family are scheduled to leave in the last group of Jews. They later moved into the smaller ghetto until it was time to be deported. The remaining Jews crowded into cattle wagons.

He does not doubt God's existence, he questions his justice since there is no help. The SS holds a selection for the Jews. Dr. Mengele, the angel of death, decides the fate of their lives once again. Elie passes and his father does not. His father later proves his usefulness to the SS officers and escapes death.
In the winter, Elie's foot swells up due to the cold, and he has to get operated on. Elie is warned that he will die if he stays in the hospital for too long. Elie panics that his leg has been amputated. The doctor said that he would be able to walk in a couple weeks. Soon, the camp had to be evacuated because the allies are approaching and anyone that was left behind will die. Elie and his father decide to evacuate with the rest of the inmates.
The inmates are forced to run over forty two miles without any rest. They didn't have a choice because if they stopped to rest, they would get shot by the SS. When the inmates are allowed to rest, a man named Rabbi Eliahou comes to look for his son. Elie realizes that his son ran away from his weak father on purpose. After arguing with his father for quite some time, Elie goes to the barracks and gets some rest. The next morning he looks for his father and finds him. He starts taking care of him by getting his father food food. Elie's father gets attacked by the inmates that's in his barrack and gets his food stolen. When his father calls Elie for water, an SS guard beats Elie’s father since he wouldn’t be quiet. Elie does not go to his father because he is afraid of the SS guard. The next day his father's body is removed. Although Elie feels free from his father, he feels ashamed of
