Nicolia's Monologue

The twinkling firelight bounces off the dull tin outside of mugs. Loud, drunk laughter fills the air as I serve more mead among the tavern's occupants. Tonight every seat is taken, yet more people pour in from the dark doorway. This is never good. The town's men have a habit of retreating to Rosaline's Tavern and Inn when they fail once again. I wonder what happened this time. Did they upset a more powerful town? Do we now owe someone more debt? Is it even possible to owe anyone more debt?
I look around observing the familiar scene. A dim light covers everyone within the building as they either serve like me or are being served. From where I am I can barely feel the cold caress of the outside air. The cool air dancing around my leg is the

I return my focus to blondie and group. In truth blondie’s name is Nicolia, but I’m what one calls not fond of him. He tends to not care about things and acts like a fool constantly. I’m not fully sure he understands that soon he will be forced to grow up.
Speaking of which, Nicolia and his friends were once again messing around as usual. It upset a few customers a little bit, though not enough for anyone to care. Expect Beardy, something in his eyes flashed violently. In a split second he is up, chair toppling behind his

I felt my muscles taunt, ready to act at the slightest signal. Nothing has ever been this way. The tavern is a place to relax and forget absolutely everything.
“What’s your name? Because I don’t believe I’ve met someone who is as blind as you,” Beardy spat with veins popping out on his forehead.
Nicolia slowly stood like a snake raising its head ready to strike. There was another sudden change in the atmosphere. The venom that dripped between the two men gaze sizzled in the air. The evaporated toxin coated me in a thick poisonous cloud.
“Me, blind? If that is what you think then you truly are a fool, not to mention a coward. The second you see safety you run and hide, trembling in a corner. You won’t be able to see the noose tighten around your neck. What Issene offered was nothing more than the device for our own destruction covered in fake hope. We stand no chance of living if we stand next to him. Say all you want about your ‘protective plan’ but don’t think the fate of town will ever once be decided by

A few miles north of Charleston, West Virginia are massive tree covered mountains. Small towns peppered the mountains except for Putney, and that mountain had only one town, Howardsville. Mysteries and old wives tales swirled around the mountain as long as anyone remembered and it’s probably those same tales that isolated the Putney Mountain. The residents of Howardsville had learned years ago to live with the legends.…

When the characters of My Children! My Africa! give monologues alone onstage they are able to reveal things to the audience that they can't say to one another. The relationships between the characters are quite constrained by age, race, and propriety; Thami and Mr. M have difficulty communicating because of their roles as teacher and student, while Isabel and Thami have different views on race relations and gender equality. During these monologues, the audience can travel in time to Thami's past as he reflects on his views on education under apartheid, or hear Isabel's true thoughts about the location before she became friends with anyone from there. The plot is punctuated by these interspersed monologues, and they deepen the audience's understanding…

Playwright, Friedrich Durrenmatt, in his play, The Visit, tells a sinister story of an old billionaire named Claire Zachanassian who returns to her childhood town and pays the town’s inhabitants to kill an old lover. One of Durrenmatt’s purposes was to make the citizens aware of the rising fascism Durrenmatt believed to have been happening after World War II. Friedrich uses The Visit as a symbol of the negative aspects of Switzerland’s fascism after World War II by using Claire and her bribe to show that she is symbolizing the authoritative power, by showing that the citizens in Güllen would do anything for Claire and their homeland because of their excessive nationalism, and by Claire’s obsession with crime and punishment, which also rubs…
