The Everlasting Impact of the Renaissance
The Renaissance was a period of recovery after the Late Middle Ages. There was a lot of competition between militaries, cultures, and governments during this time which led to innovation. During this time there was also an emphasis on writing and artwork. Inventions, literary works, and pieces of art came to define this time period in many ways. Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press, Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince, and Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper are just a few examples of important items that came from the Renaissance.

Because print materials were more widely available and less expensive, more people were able to read and gain knowledge, both in the educational system and independently. As people read and explored more, their questioning led to increased innovation in many different fields. The increased level of literacy reformed education. Without the printing press we would not have widespread use of textbooks or literary works in schools today. One of his most famous paintings was The Last Supper (1495-1498). The painting was of Jesus and his disciples before Jesus was crucified. The painting is located in Milan in a monastery dining hall. Leonardo da Vinci tried an experiment with a different style of fresco and it failed. Fresco is the painting of a picture on wet plaster so it will dry into the wall. He tried to paint the picture on dry plaster instead. The Last Supper has deteriorated due to being painted right next to the kitchen where heat and humidity caused the paint to peel off. Besides the heat and humidity, there has been other damage to the painting over the years. The building was bombed during World War II and left exposed to the elements of nature. Part of the painting was removed to make a door to the kitchen. Although the painting has been damaged, it is such an important piece that there is constant restoration occurring.
The Last Supper is a painting that has religious significance and is an inspiring image in numerous religious buildings. It is a widely accepted picture to this day, and many people want to see the original painting. During communion in the Catholic faith, the priest quotes what Jesus said during the Last Supper.
