I would choose Niccoló Machiavelli to be the other student in my tutorial, Political Science: The Methods of Ruling. Machiavelli was an Italian diplomat, who is best known for his work, The Prince. In this handbook, he argues that a prince or political figure needs to be cunning and ruthless in order to maintain his power. He also claims that it is better for a prince to be feared than loved by his people. Morally, I disagree with these assertions and a plethora of other principles that he acknowledges in his handbook, for history has displayed countless times that the people will rise up to overthrow a ruthless and feared leader; however, they will unconsciously obey a loved leader. This disparity between our opinions is beneficial, for disagreement

Machiavellian Ruler, Ivan the Terrible Ivan Vasilyevich, Ivan IV, was a Machiavellian ruler called to the throne at the age of three after his father’s death; however, his mother, Yelena Glinskaya, ruled as a surrogate until her death in 1538. Later on, Ivan IV was crowned as Russia’s ruler on January 16, 1547 (Andryev). Later, during the constructive period of Ivan’s reign, he issued many reforms involving self-government, taxes, and religion (“Ivan the Terrible”). After this seemingly calm time, Ivan IV’s iconic rule truly began with the death of his wife, Anastasia (Shaposhnik 75). Ivan IV, later known as Ivan the Terrible, exhibited the qualities of a Machiavellian ruler, because he had extensive military knowledge, because he weakened a stronger force, the nobility, to gain power himself, and because was more feared by his subjects feared than loved.…

Would Socrates Support a Machiavellian System? During a time of political turmoil, it is hard to know who to trust, and who should lead. In “The Prince” Machiavelli lists a plethora of guidelines as to how a prince should gain political power along with ways for them to ensure this power is long-lasting. The Purpose of Government and if It Fails Machiavelli thinks that the most important feature of the government is to provide prosperity and stability, while Locke thinks it is the preservation of the property and the property rights, which go beyond the protection of the physical properties. Both men start from the same assumption that the government is able to provide its people with a possibility of coexistence and mutual respect for the future. Both men agree that, although coming from different angle, a government has a purpose, and if it fails to uphold the purpose, the subjects or the people can reconstitute the government. Machiavelli theorizes that the people in the state of nature (he thinks it as an individualistic setting "like…

In the article “Subdue the Senate: Machiavelli’s Way of Freedom or Path to Tyranny” author John P. McCormick sets out to make the distinction between tyranny and civic leadership. McCormick states that Machiavelli “was fully aware of the tension between leaderly initiative and popular rule…” McCormick points out the conflict in Machiavelli’s argument by stating “How can a single individual follow Machiavelli's advice about favoring the people over the few without becoming a tyrant in the process?” he goes on to argue that if a leader can achieve this then the next obstacle is how this same leader can avoid catering to the elite or the grandi as Machiavelli referred to them. In the article McCormick argues that Machiavelli “advises astute leaders…

Machiavelli and Hobbes both address the impact the human emotion of fear has on the political realm. In The Prince, Machiavelli explains how fear is a tool meant to be manipulated by the prince as a means to keep the people in line with the law and loyal. Not enough fear instilled in the public may lead them to disloyalty and then the dethroning of the prince; on the other hand, too much fear perpetuates hatred among the people and leads once again to the prince’s removal. Unlike seeing human fear as a tool, Hobbes in the Leviathan describes it more as a natural emotion of human which pushes the creations of covenants—social agreements or contracts among the people and the sovereign. In the state of nature, the natural condition of men without…

Niccolo Machiavelli was born in 1469 and died in 1527 and lived during the Italian Renaissance in Florence. He wrote The Prince, a specula principis or “mirror for princes,” when he was forty-four-years-old after being dismissed from being a diplomat because he was suspected of conspiring against the new government when there was a change of regime. He was found innocent and left town to live with his family in the countryside, where “he tramped the hills by day and, in the long, empty evenings, began to write down some considerations on how to win power and, above all, how to hold on to it, how not to be a victim of circumstance,” which resulted in The Prince (Parks VII). Machiavelli’s own reversal of fortune was not the only example of the…

Machiavelli wrote ‘The Prince’ to tell others how he sees a good prince. He says a prince “in order to hold his position, must acquire the power to be not good, and understand when to use it and when not to use it, in accord with necessity” (The Prince ch15). He didn’t believe that humans are perfect because “But because no ruler can possess or fully practice them, on account of human conditions that do not permit it, he needs to be so prudent that he escapes ill repute for such vices as might take his position away from him, and that he protects himself from such as will not take it away if he can; if he cannot, with little concern he passes over the letter vices” (The Prince ch15). I used that quote because Machiavelli is saying no one…

Growing up in such a tumultuous era allowed Niccolò Machiavelli to examine many cases of the rise and subsequent fall of short-lived governments as well as their causes, such as constantly changing alliances. These experiences led to a cynical view of human nature along with a clear understanding of the objectionable behavior necessary to retain power in politics. His career as a politician and diplomat cemented his very pragmatic stance on human nature and the nature of politics, both of which are described throughout The Prince. Unlike fellow philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, who preferred to hypothesize based on ideals, Machiavelli held the contentious belief that a separation between politics and moral philosophy was the necessary…

In The Prince, Niccolo Machiavelli’s understanding of virtue and effective rule emphasizes the maintenance of political power and the disregard for morality, differing from the ideology of the classic political philosophers. Machiavelli’s concept of virtue is centered around the glorification of a ruler, facilitated by behavioural traits such as bravery, cleverness, deceptiveness, and ruthlessness. Effective rule requires these attributes, as the successful application of these characteristics towards the acquisition and maintenance of power will allow one to become a powerful leader. Machiavelli first explains the foundations of various principalities, such as hereditary and mixed principalities, as the maintenance of power differs…
