The football that we see in the National Football League (NFL) is the same as the Canadian Football League (CFL), but with different teams and rules. In the NFL, a team has four chances to get a first down (getting the ball ten yards), but in the CFL they only get three chances. Not only is the amount of downs different, but so are the amount of players on the field. In the NFL, there are eleven players on the field, opposed to the CFL, where there are twelve! In the CFL, they can fit twelve people onto the field easier because the field is bigger than the NFL’s field. In fact, the field is ten yards wider than the NFL’s field. In the NFL, they really only get three chances to get a first down. They could use their four chances to get a first down. If they do not get the ball ten yards by their fourth try, they have to give the football to the opposing team in the spot where they missed their fourth chance. The only time they would do this is if they were losing and it was a close game. Other than the game being close, they would not go for it on fourth down. This would mean they would punt. Punting is when they kick the ball down the field so that they give the other team the ball, but they just get it farther away than where they are now. This is the same rules for the CFL, except they really only get two chances unless they try to convert on their last try!
