NF Stage 56 corresponds to a 38 day old tadpole as can be seen in Figure2.2. At this point, their elbows and wrists are clearly distinguishable, the length of the free parts of their fingers are three to four times their breadth, while the lengths of the fourth and fifth toes cartilage are six times their breadth. The tadpole measures a total length of 70 – 100mm (Nieuwkoop & Faber, 1994).

2.3.5.3.3 Stage 57

NF Stage 57 corresponds to a 41 day old tadpole as can be seen in Figure2.3. They have a pigment free spot that appears above the frontal organ and the angle of the elbow form an angle greater than 90 degrees. Their fingers are now seven times their breadth and are stretched out. The tadpole

The olfactory nerve is longer than the olfactory bulb. Guanophores start appearing on the lower jaw with the opening of the gill chambers being wide. The distal half of the fingers on an outstretched forelimb extend beyond the base of the hindlimb. 2.3.5.3.7 Stage 61

NF Stage 61 corresponds to a 48 day old tadpole as can be seen in Figure2.7. The head has narrowed, with the tentacles much shorter and curved backwards. The length of the olfactory nerve is equal to the diameter of the olfactory bulb. The fourth arterial arch can be seen just in front of the forelimb. The openings of the gill chambers are narrowed. The forelimbs are at the level of the posterior half of the heart, with the adult skin area on the abdomen covering the posterior half of the heart and the fins significantly reduced (Nieuwkoop & Faber, 1994).
