New York Woodwind Concert Analysis

On Tuesday, April 19th, The New York Woodwind Quintet performed at the University of Idaho. The members of quintet consisted of flutist Carol Wincenc, oboist Stephen Taylor, clarinetist Charles Neidich, bassoonist Marc Goldberg, and hornist Willian Purvis. The quintet is entering its seventh decade with the members who are dedicated to both chamber music and are individual soloists, while also teaching and mentoring woodwind performers. Purvis and Neidich also transcribe and compose arrangements and even compose their own works and perform them in their concerts. The members were all dressed nicely in black tuxes and Wincenc in a gold skirt. They all were actively engaged in the music, however Wincenc seemed the most enthusiastic and her passion for music showed throughout the entire performance. The quintet started the concert out with Partita composed by Irving Fine in 1948. The song consisted of five movements: Introduction and Theme, Variation, Interlude, Gigue, and the Coda. In the program notes it states that this piece demonstrates Fine’s talent for melody, interest in neoclassical style, and a sound that “seems utterly American”, and after hearing this piece, I agree. Dolente partita published in 1606 but transcribed by William Purvis. These pieces are important because they signify the transition from Renaissance to Baroque. In Cruda Amarilli, Monteverdi uses word painting to show the bitter frustration between a lover and a man who doesn’t have any interest with love in general. The rhythms are simple and have a steady beat, but Monteverdi uses dissonance in a new way using it to show conflict between the character’s prevailing emotions. In Ah! Dolente partita, the same type of word paining and dissonance are used as well, to show the separation of the lovers by going from unison to minor to show pain and
