Possible challenges I am likely to experience when transitioning from a Student to a New Graduate Nurse.
Introduction
The transition from student to nurse has been the subject of discussion in the literature and among prospective graduates due to the stressors and challenges that comes with the process (Levett-Jones & FitzGerald, 2005). Accordingly, Chang and Daly (2015) has described the period of graduate nurse transition as characterised by rapid self-development, high anxiety and reality shock. To be successful with any job application, one must demonstrate in writing how he or she meets the job’s selection criteria (McKenzie, 2016). This will be assessed and graded, and in most cases, used to select the suitable applicants. The competitive nature of the market is imperative for me to use my excellent writing skills to appropriately address the selection criteria and update my curriculum vitae when applying for a position. This will ultimately enable me to progress through the first stage of the selection process. McKenzie (2016) note that a good resume is important because it takes one to the job interview but the superior interviewing skills enable one to acquire a job. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare in advance both psychologically and emotionally in order to be able to respond to the interview questions in the right manner. In so doing, I have researched from various sources including the internet and face-to-face encounter with managers of various hospitals and compiled a list of common interviewing questions and appropriate answers to these questions. I have also watched videos on how to position myself during an interview and the signals people convey via their body language. Evidence suggest that the first year of nursing practice is challenging for many new graduate nurses, particularly as they strive to build confidence in their professional practice (Pfaff, Baxter, Jack, & Ploeg, 2014). It is suggested that most academic programs provide limited opportunities for nursing students to develop a sense of confidence in inter professional collaboration (Olson, 2009; Pfaff et al., 2014). However, my previous and current professional experience has given me the ability to relate to my team in a manner that promotes the delivery of positive outcomes to my patients. I have enhanced this quality particularly during my clinical placements at ward 6 West in Calvary Private Hospital where it was necessary to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to achieve set goals and to satisfy the unique and complex needs of patients. My outstanding collaboration, interpersonal and communication skills will also assist to develop and maintain strong relationships with members of my team. I always express my views clearly and logically and respect the views of others. Also, I draw on the team’s strengths, assist and support team members where necessary to achieve the best possible outcome. I am open to feedback and constructive criticisms without reacting defensively. This acquired skill will greatly assist during the
