Roosevelt won two elections for the New York Governor seat and the led him to be a strong choice for the Democratic Presidential nomination. And his strategy for the fall campaign was very simple: let Hoover do all the work and don’t do anything crazy. Hoover was wildly unpopular with the America due to his lack of attention to the budget causing the Great Depression so Roosevelt figured he would let his unpopularity shift America to the Democratic Party. He gave speeches all across the country that were vague and filled with things everyone wanted to hear but only a few times did he share actual ideas and plans he had. In one speech to the delegates he pledged a “New Deal” for the American people the term stuck and became apart of his campaign.

The year after his re-election in 1937 there was an unexpected recession that was soon making all efforts of the past four years irrelevant. There were actually conspiracies that the economic powers had caused this recession intentionally but no truth ever became of it. But it was back to the drawing board for Roosevelt. During this recession Roosevelt introduced the Fair Labor Standards in 1937. This Act limited the work to a maximum of forty hours, it created a minimum wage, and eliminated child labor. When that became a talking point he made a few effective appearances and along the way parted ways with his vice president Henry Wallace. Instead he decided to pick up Harry S. Truman. Roosevelt ended up winning for the fourth consecutive time and is the first and last president to ever serve four terms in office. Roosevelt’s health really was a concern though. With victory in their grasp Roosevelt met with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin for post war negotiations and both gentlemen were shocked at how frail he looked. He also became incredibly isolated in his last years as Eleanor was never home and his sons were fighting in the war. He reignited his old flame with Eleanor’s secretary, whom he had not seen since he halted the affair since Eleanor discovered its existence. In April 1945 Franklin took off to Warm Springs, Georgia to visit with family and on April 12th he was felled by a massive stroke. Harry Truman assumed office following his death.
