Trait Definition Neuroticism is one of the five personality traits associated with the Five Factor Model of personality. This model of personality also includes the traits openness-to-experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness. Neuroticism describes a personality trait in which the person possessing the trait may be more likely to voice feelings of anxiety and often fluctuates emotionally (Vitterso & Nilsen, 2002). According to McCrae and Sutin, “neuroticism reflects the extent to which people are anxious, hostile, depressed, self-conscious, impulsive, and vulnerable” (2007). Though I have been told that I was not a fussy baby, I do know that as I got older I seemed to become more easily emotionally affected. The emotions I typically would express are those of sadness, worry, or anxiety instead of anger or aggressiveness. These feelings have increased with age due to deeper introspection with age in addition to more difficult life circumstances and greater stress. As a child I believe I cried easily if I was in trouble, got hurt, or watched a sad movie or television show. It is not always easy to moderate my emotional reactions or anxiety, but through all circumstances I am hopeful and optimistic. This positivity largely stems from the value I place in my Christian faith and personal relationship with God. When present circumstances seem bleak, I rely on strength from faith and relationships with loved ones to support me. Also, I can sometimes pull myself out of a bout of anxiety or sadness by focusing on the positives in my life. As a result, though neuroticism is a trait that is a strong portion of my personality, I am able to moderate the behaviors and thoughts that result from it. As I am continuing to grow and learn, I believe I am also becoming more skilled in moderating its
