The field of neuromechanics uses a large range of tools and sophisticated technology in order to achieve its results. Two important measurement techniques used in the field of neuromechanics are pressure mapping and electromyograms (EMG). Both tools are vital to neuromechanic researchers and are commonly used to help study human movement. An electromyogram is a machine that helps to study muscle contractions in order to detect any discrepancies in how the muscle is functioning. Electromyograms are able to detect electrical activity in the muscle which can be analyzed to see if a certain muscle is working properly. EMGs can either be used by placing electrodes directly into the muscle, called an intramuscular EMG, or it can function by placing electrodes on top of the …show more content…
Most pressure mapping devices come in the form of a versatile mat which allows it to be used for a variety of different research. Many pressure mapping mats are made up of piezoelectric sensors which means that the resistance will change as pressure is applied. Pressure mapping devices are very expensive, usually costing around $8,000 plus the added cost of the computer. The prices can also vary due to how large the mat is and what type of research is being conducted with it. The device is very advanced and collects the data from the surface contact area and translates it onto a computer screen in a color coded image. Usually blue is representative of low pressure while red is indicative of very high pressure. Although pressure mapping devices can be extremely useful, they are very hard to read. Many factors can affect the reading of the device such as; resolution of the mat, size of the mat, the number of sensors, and the sensitivity of the system. As a result, the analysis of the data can be interpreted in many different manners sometimes making pressure mapping
