Over the raucous noise of people chatting and drinks being served in a small cafe, Ron Eschete, a jazz guitarist, swiftly strummed a solo to the song "How high the moon." He appeared to be in a state of meditation, with sweat dripping down his brow and eyes sealed shut. While in complete synchrony with the band behind him he spontaneously composed a beautiful melody filled with complex rhythms and syncopations. As a 17-year-old high school student who grew up playing classical piano and violin, I wondered: how is he able to create a piece like that out of thin air? What was going through his mind as he developed these ideas? Was it a simple regurgitation of countless solos he has played in the past or was it truly a new tune created influenced by the heat of that moment? I was filled with wonder and awe as I speculated what it is about music that can mystically unlock our emotions, thoughts and memories? Through this experience, my early passion for music sparked an interest in functions of the brain.

With the tremendous amount of research and new therapeutic modalities developing, I expect practicing neurology to be very rewarding as patients who suffer from chronic neurological conditions have increasingly more hope. The recent discovery of the neuro-lymphatic system by the University of Virginia may unlock key mechanisms of immune related neurological disease such as multiple sclerosis, autism, and Alzheimer's disease. I am excited to seeing this field of translational research improve the lives of patients through new forms of therapies. I look forward to a residency program that will help me sharpen my diagnostic acuity, challenge me to continue learning and grow into a compassionate neurologist I endeavor to
