Sport: Netball
Injury: Ligament tear
Location: Ankle
How the injury occurred:
• Player is landing after receiving a catch but as they land they roll their ankle outwards
Ways to prevent injury:
• Wear supportive shoes designed for netball
• Make sure the surface is flat and made with appropriate material
• Tape or wear an ankle support
• Warm-up before commencing exercise
• Stop activity when any pain is felt even mild pain
Steps involved in immediate assessment of injury:
• TOTAPS
• T - Talk to the injured person to determine what happened. Ask questions such as: how did it happen? What happened? Where does it hurt?
• O - Observe the injured person and any irregularities in limbs and the suspected injured area, e.g. compare …show more content…
For a grade 1 tear, the athlete will be able to progress through the rehabilitation at a faster rate. For a grade 3 tear (complete tear), athletes will probably need surgery. Recovery and rehabilitation will take a lot longer (approximately 3 months).
Extended Care of injury:
• After 72 hours
• Depending on severity of the tear different rehabilitation processes will be taken
• Grade 1: o Microscopic tearing of collagen fibres o Weight bearing as tolerated o No splinting/casting o Isometric exercises o Full range-of-motion and stretching/ strengthening exercises as tolerated
• Grade 2: o Complete tears of most but not all collagen fibres in the ligament o Immobilization with splint o Physical therapy with range-of-motion and stretching/ strengthening exercises done gradually as swelling and pain decreases
• Grade 3: o Complete tear/ rupture of ligament o Immobilization o Physical therapy similar to that for grade 2 sprains but over a longer period o Possible surgical reconstruction
• Work load should be gradually increased until athlete is back to their pre-injury fitness level

Ask questions such as: how did it happen? What happened? Where does it hurt?
• O - Observe the injured person and any irregularities in limbs and the suspected injured area, e.g. compare injured left ankle to right ankle. Is the athlete in distress? Is there swelling?
• T - Touch the suspected injured area to determine severity of the injury. Feel for swelling or tenderness around injured area.
• A - Active movement, by the trainer, of the injured area to determine ability to return to play.
• P - Passive movement by the athlete of the injured area to allow a decision to return to play.
• S - Skills assessment by trainer, coach and player to determine ability to return to play.
• Should the athlete pass all of these tests they are fit to return to the game
Steps involved in immediate care of the injury:
• R.I.C.E.R should be administered immediately following the tear for 48-72 hours.
• R-Rest, Avoid movement as much as possible to limit further injury. Don't put any weight on the injured ankle.
• I- Ice, Place cold pack wrapped in a towel onto the injured area. Ice pack should be applied for 20 minutes every two hours. Continue this treatment for the first 48-72
