Empathy — a concept learned in these Humanities classes — is described as looking through the eyes of another's soul. Just being in their shoes is not enough, you have to feel the same and think the same. Using this skill set with others can ultimately give you an inside look into this person which could help you in more than just the business world. As a teen, I wasn't emotional or rather was unsure on how to express them. When I entered my first high school English class we read Night by Elie Wiesel, the first book to give the urge for empathy.…

There are many reasons why reading literature is important to society and important to being human. Reading literature allows us to step into someone else’s shoes and understand their differences and culture. Allowing us to step in someone else’s shoes, we can feel sympathy, rage, happiness, or love; giving us these emotions means that we can experience empathy, which is the one aspect that makes us human. Authors have the ability to reach these emotions within people by using diction, imagery, metaphors/similes or other literary devices. On top of that literature can also give audiences a glimpse of history, with the use of story-telling, it helps us better understand the time in which the text was written.…

In the article, Reading Literature Makes us Smarter and Nicer by Annie Murphy Paul, it explains the ways “deep reading” has lost it’s interest in the lives of the new generation and the ways it has affected their personality. Personally, reading to me has always been a struggle, before the technology was even there I couldn’t stay interested in a book without losing my train of thought. I’ve always loved reading don’t get me wrong there’s nothing better then laying down and finishing off that scene that had you at the edge of your seat, but, there really isn’t enough time to do that anymore, and when we do have time we are always doing something else that interests us way more . I wouldn’t particularly say that “deep reading” changes who a person is, I know a lot of people who can’t read whatsoever and they’re the nicest people you will ever meet. I for instance was raised to respect my elders and respect all who live, women, men, animals, everything, and that is that I wouldn’t read daily.…

Honors English Final The general argument made by Lee Siegal in “Should Literature Be Useful?” is that there is a definite need for all people to read fiction because it teaches empathy – something many believe is only attained through reading nonfiction. More specifically, Siegal argues that fictitious stories offer just as much of a societal benefit as nonfiction by stating, “Reading fiction is good…because it makes you a more effective social agent. Which is pretty much what being able to read a train schedule does for you, too.” Furthermore, empathy is more than just sympathy or compassion.…

Fiction also heighten one’s sense of empathy, or maybe lack thereof. By reading about death, or suffering for example, one exercises the ability to feel what someone else is feeling. Reaching all corners of a character’s mind and taking a familiarity and interest to them, and then something miserable happening to them makes the reader feel even more attached to the character. Reading the narrator’s thoughts and feelings can make one more empathetic and understanding of emotions, which is a better comprehension of suffering through…

If empathy was not a part of everyday life, many people would not be able to bare the cruelty and harshness that the world would behold. Empathy facilitates connections and interactions, which are essential in an environment. It is the identification with another as ourselves, and without this, more sexism, racism, ageism and judgment would result in more hatred, chaos, and violence on the planet. When imagining your life as someone else’s, you can almost feel their emotions and understand their perspective. Christopher, in the novel, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”, he has trouble understanding others.…

The documentary, Bully, follows five children, from elementary school to high school, and offers an intimate viewpoint on the topic of bullying, and how it affects young children and their families. My overall reaction to this documentary was an initial feeling of sadness. Sadness for the children who have been affected by bullying in the documentary, and sadness for all of those who have been affected by bullying in their lives. This feeling soon turned into a concoction of disappointment, anger, and overall confusion. Disappointment and anger in the fact that children in today’s society feel the need to verbally and physically attack others, and disappointment in the way that bullying is handled by teachers, parents, and administration.…
