In June of 1971, President Nixon declared a War on Drugs, which turned out to be a huge failure with divesting unintended consequences. Many people were ending up behind bars for piddle crime that were leading to mass incarceration and corruption. The prison corporations have become the moneymakers because “ crime is 25- 75% higher because of the war on drugs” (Payan, 2006). Instead of helping people that had a drug problem they well just send them to prison where they can be turned into a profit. “ Moreover, if cracking down on drugs increases the amount of property crime due to the reallocation of police resources, them police budgets would possible increase” (Shelden, 2004).
