Negative Correlation

Correlation, from chapter one, is a measure of the extent to which two factors vary together, and thus of how well either factor predicts the other. There are two different types of correlation, positive correlation and negative correlation. Positive correlation is when two things either increase or decrease together at the same time. A negative correlation is when two things are doing the opposite of eachother at the same time. For example, as one thing increases the other will decrease at the same time. Most people believe that for a positive correlation the two things are just going to increase, but really the two things can either increase or decrease at the same time to make it a positive correlation. Most people believe that negative reinforcement is a punishment, but it is not a punishment in any way. All it means is when something that is aversive is removed from a situation. An example of a negative reinforcement is hitting the snooze on an alarm. Two other concepts that are widely misused is schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder. Most people think the two mental illnesses are alike, but they are not what so ever. Schizophrenia is when people feel like they are in their own little private world, and also they have strange ideas and images that haunt them periodically. Dissociative identity disorder is when there are two or more distinct identities each with its own voice and actions, and they also seem to control the other person’s behavior too.
