This model of personality includes only five traits which seem to well-define different areas of personality without being overcomplicated or oversimplified. Emotionality is a simple definition that exemplifies the core of what the trait of neuroticism is.
Neuroticism is manifested through emotional fluctuations and feelings of anxiety (Vitterso & Nilsen, 2002). The trait causes a person’s likeliness to showcase negative emotions in challenging situations to be largely unwavering (Lahey, 2009). According to McCrae and Sutin (2007), “neuroticism reflects the extent to which people are anxious, hostile, depressed, self-conscious, impulsive, and vulnerable” (page number). Each personality trait comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. It is often true that these are each based on personal opinion instead of scientific fact. For example, neuroticism carries with it a negative connotation of weakness. Though there are various degrees of neuroticism and thus various advantages and disadvantages at each level, a trait can quickly be defined by mental schemas instead of evidence-based support. The advantages and disadvantages of neuroticism from my personal perspective will be mentioned in the later section of this
