Summary of Needs Assessment In the need’s assessment and during observations, it’s very clear that time-management was the most foreseen issue of the Mississippi Department of Human Services-Division (MDHS)- Division of Family and Children’s Services (DFCS). My interactions with the staff where limited because of the case loads on staff. The supervisor of this agency is the regional director of DFCS. She was very timely in everything that she dealt with from my observation. Time-management comes into play when court reports information did not meet time frame for court hearings. According to Spidal (2009), “Time management is really about self- management” (pg.16). Self-management gives us the ability to manage our resources and task by allocating time. Because time-management is a vital skill for this agency, I believe it’s important to provide the necessary information to stress the importance of time-management. Time-Management is being able to manage one’s self and task at any given moment. The staff at DFCS are expected to deliver the proposed or needed services to families in a timely, accurate, and compassionate manner. When dealing with families and the diversity among individuals, this unit is responsible for reporting the necessary information to establish monthly reports. Most importantly, time-management allows us to create a system that effectively distributes the task in designated work hours. This involves a process of determining needs, setting and achieving goals, and prioritizing and planning tasks to achieve a specific result. By allocating time, you are able to accomplish many tasks at any given moment. Managing time allows the staff to maximize productivity by self-regulating one’s actions. According to O’Donovan (2006), “ we have to work smarter, not harder” (pg.68). This basically means that the result of our behavior would result in our perceived control of time-management. Staff members that are empowered and self-aware become partners within their environment. By allocating time effectively, this agency will be able to prioritize tasks in a healthy way. The climate of this agency is very committed to individuals and families they work with, but have difficulty finding time to squeeze in paperwork.
