It is an honor to be here with you this afternoon –ALC graduating class 001-18.
It's always a pleasure to speak to the future of our NCO Corp. I would like to say Congratulations. (Number of students) of you have completed a demanding course, accomplishing another important milestone in your careers. I see a few proud faces of unit members and families. Army families are a powerful part of the Army team, and are just as responsible for our successes as those of us who wear the uniform. So I want to thank you for your support. As the country works its way through the challenges with the economy and a world filled with seemingly persistent conflict, the Army will be faced with continuous new demands. We will be asked to do things better, faster,

He told us we would be responsible for turning in the 2 parts vans and 8 vehicles before we were able to leave to return back to Ft. Riley. Our flights were scheduled to leave in 7 days. I was thinking to myself, “that is a lot to do in this short period of time”. After speaking with the section, we tried to come up with a plan to meet the deadline. There were 12 soldiers in the section. There was only one Sergeant left on our team and the rest of the Soldiers were Specialists and below. I knew that it was going to take all of us to work as a team to get this done. I remembered from last rotation what worked well and what didn’t. So I started to prep and work on these things. My sergeant noticed and asked what I was doing. I informed him what my plan was to help the section and he liked it. Then he said, “You are in charge of coordinating the turn-in process”. I was hesitant at first to take on this responsibility because there were higher ranking Soldiers in the section. I asked myself, “Would they listen to me. Could I get this done”? Before my SSG left to return home, he talked to me about what he expected and told me who to talk to if I had any issues. His trust and confidence in me to execute the task at hand is what helped me push through the uncertainties and inspired me to do my best. We accomplished the mission with one day to spare. I felt good about what we had accomplished. Shortly after (within due time), I was promoted and received recognition from my unit, and from a MSG from another unit with whom observed what I had done to get the equipment turned

Duty performance: Thurman, your performance for this month has been exceptional. The reason I say that is because you have done anything above and beyond the regular tasks that is given and expected of all soldiers. I would like to see you creating opportunities to prove yourself to be more deserving of a promotion. There are other soldiers in our company with the same rank as you that are fighting for the same promotions and waivers as you, so in order to get progress you have to give more while at work. But do not be discouraged, you have been doing well at accomplishing tasks that are thrown at you.…

Marines, I'd like to thank you all for the hard work, perseverance and keeping up with the ever changing battlefield known as recruiting. Summer and PCS moves are on the horizon. I wanted to touch base on a couple of topics prior to everyone exiting stage left. The reason is to ensure that everyone is aware of expectations. The expectations listed below are the minimum the command group expects and your SNCOIC may need to add additional requirements.…

My Experience in the 35Batallion In June 2008, I was appointed as the 35Batallion staff officer in charge of operations and training. This position was important but challenging especially because the Battalion was undergoing a UN peacekeeping pre-deployment training and was to be deployed in one of the most insecure place of Darfur. The Battalion Hq was to be established in Kabkabiya locality which was the most insecure area of Darfur because it was also known as the Headquarter of Janjaweed militias, a pro-government militia group that was conducting ethnic cleansing on behalf of the Sudan government. In addition, it was to be my first experience in the UN peacekeeping operations. More unfortunately, the 35BN Commanding officer Col K John…

“Lead by Example” is a term that has no origin, per se, but is visible throughout history further back than Alexander the Great (356 BC – 323 BC). A king at age 19, and conqueror of much of the known world, would draw a sword and lead the charge. The sight of Alexander leading the charge had a motivational inspiring effect on his army that no force on Earth could withstand. As a result of his leadership style, he has no recorded battlefield losses during 11 years of conquest. As a side note, I named my only son after Alexander the Great (Alexander Fritz Daniel Way).…

After reading the student handout, “An Army White Paper, The Profession of Arms”, you come across two important definitions. The first definition you come across is The Profession of Arms, in which it states “The Army is an American Profession of Arms, a vocation compromised of experts certified in the ethical application of land combat power, serving under civilian authority, entrusted to defend the Constitution and the rights and interests of the American people.” The second definition you come across is The Professional Soldier, in which it states “An American Professional Soldier is an expert, a volunteer certified in the profession of Arms, bonded with comrades in a shared identity and culture of sacrifice and service to the nation and the Constitution, who adheres to the highest ethical standards and is a steward of the future of the Army profession.” The Adjutant General’s Corps plays a big role in the day to day operations of the military.…

I was ecstatic knowing that I would be able to take on another responsibility that was required of a Sergeant. I informed my Sergeant and the information was routed up my chain of command. Upon not receiving any information, I assumed I was going to be able to fulfill the duties of Barracks Manager. I went to work the next day and got reprimanded for taking on a duty that was not of my rank, being too valuable of an asset at work, and not informing anyone in my chain of command of the position I was going to be holding. My Gunnery Sergeant stripped me of my keys and billet and proceeding to take out his frustrations on me because he had to fix the problem I created.…

In my view, this type of operation requires more than one individual in order to be successful; you have your Platoon Leader and you have your medical provider no only to support you, but to help you find the best way to fulfill the commander’s intent. So, it was surprising to me, that you did not mention any of them in your explanation of the events. The one positive thing about your actions when trying to implement changes in the organization and operation of the aid-station, is the fact that you successfully delegated some the tasks to your subordinates, and effectively shared the responsibilities with fellow Non-Commisioned Officers (NCO). As a leader, you were successful at recognizing flaws and implementing actions through collaboration, which improved the conditions of the…

I wanted to take a few minutes before my family departs Fairchild to thank you for all you have done and are doing for the families of our Airmen. I have seen unlimited acts of kindness and support to families across our base. I have heard of tough situations which have been handled with "kid gloves", resulting in positive outcomes for everyone. I am aware that you may be privileged to information that would make great water cooler topics, however you keep it to yourselves and pass it on only when necessary and to the proper chain of command. I'm also aware that it's not always easy as you reach out to families who may not think they need anything, yet you provide a sounding board for them or are actually able to help with something that…

My first duty station was at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. I felt 10 feet tall walking into the S-1 for in processing with my green dress uniform but tall that motivation went down the drain, the ghost of my language barrier and jokes about height continue hunting me. Once again, jokes about my accent and height were my daily treatment by many of the Soldiers. There was not a single day that my Sergeant did not listen to a complaint from me about my experience, but he provided resilience and challenges me not let those comments discourage me from reaching my goals. He set me up for two goals, winning the Soldier of the Quarter and earning my first badge, the Air Assault Badge.…

My interest in the Naval Academy and the fleet began as just another college option. I have not had any family member serve in the Navy and was rather indifferent to military service, other than my admiration for the men and women who serve. As I continued to explore my options, the Naval Academy remained on the backburner until I visited for the summer STEM program two years ago. As soon as I first walked on post, I instantly knew I loved it--the beautiful old architecture, the shimmering blue water, and the white-clad Midshipmen marching crisply down Stribbling. This past summer, when I visited again for NASS, I decided the Naval Academy was the one for me.…

When I got a call saying my soldier needed me I neglected to act on this and inform my chain of command who is equipped to deal with the situation. In the future I will be sure to notify my chain of command of anything that has to do with my soldiers or I because they can not properly do their jobs if I do not do mine. I am sorry for being careless and plan to use this event as a learning tool. I now know how serious things can get when a corporal tries to do the job of a platoon sergeant and will not let it happen again. A lot of people say that “it takes a community to raise a child” being an NCO is very much the same because one NCO cannot do everything it takes to take care of a soldier, it takes a…
