The United States Naval Academy established in October 10, 1845 known as the second oldest out of the five service academies. The purpose of the United States Naval Academy is to educate future officers that will soon in four years commission into the United States Navy or the United States Marine Corps. More than 4,000 men and women representing every state and other foreign countries making up the Brigade of Midshipmen learn from both civilian and military instructors in both academic and military subjects. Distinguished graduates paving the way from their successes here at the Academy or out in the fleet with real life situations where they are responsible for the well-being of their subordinates. In 1869, an unsuspecting mid returning from leave brought the concept of football and brought the ball with him on to campus. In 1882 a midshipman by the name of Vaulx Carter has organized and coached the first Navy football team. He organized a game with the Baltimore Athletic Club which ended in a scoreless tie on Thanksgiving Day. The Baltimore Club football team consisted of players from Johns Hopkins University but were unable to play due to the administrator’s negative view towards the sport. Their uniform was designed by Carter himself, with a maroon and white uniform and a strip of leather which was nailed to the bottom of the shoes that we know as cleats. Playing Johns Hopkins and beating the 8-0 being entirely student operated and not being supported by the Naval Academy’s faculty. This was the Academy’s only victory until 1884 when they defeated Johns Hopkins 6-0 giving Carter the title still to this day with the second fewest wins in Navy football
