How do nature and nurture interact to produce cognitive development?
According to Bartels et al. (2002), including ages 5,7,10, and 12, genetics are influential primarily through a common factor contributing exclusively to stability.Shared environmental factors strained a significant influence on stability and instability (Petrill, Lipton, Hewitt, etc.). Cognitive development is influenced both by individual’s inherited traits and by their environment. Most psychologists take both the nature and nurture side. Albert Bandura’s social learning theory takes the nurture side of cognitive development. A popular experiment of this was his Bobo doll experiment. A lot of research that has been done has been over how a child imagines the world. Jean Piaget was a prominent figure in the making of this branch, forming his "theory of cognitive development". The four stages that Piaget brought forth were: the preoperational, sensorimotor , concrete operational and formal operational period. So how do we know what part of Nature is involved in children’s cognitive development? We really only know what we think we know. We are all technically bias towards whether or not we chose nature or nurture. Those who believe in the nature side of cognitive development are nativists. Nature refers to our heredity factors that influence who we are. Certain cognitive abilities come from nature and not nurture; such as, perfect pitch. This ability can not be taught (nurtured). The Human Genome Project for example, has stimulated enormous interest in tracing types of behavior to particular strands of DNA located on specific chromosomes
