Did the baby just pop up one day and decide that he or she wanted to talk? Behaviorsts B.F. Skinner principles or concepts were that infant language development had a lot to do with the care-givers verbal interaction. (McLaughlin, 2010, p.1) At 2 months babies make vowel-like noises called cooing and then slowly but surely they progress to consonants. (Berk, 2012, p.236) Four months later babbling appears. (Berk, 2012, p.236) Babbling is the combination of consonants and vowels, for example “mamamamama.” (Berk, 2012, p.236) The next stage of language development is becoming a communicator.(Berk,2012,p.237) Since a baby can’t talk they began to communicate using gestures.(Berk,2012,p.238) They use these preverbal gestures to direct attention of the adults or to convey helpful information.(Berk,2012,p.238) An example of a preverbal gesture would be a child raising his or her arms straight up in the air indicating they want to be picked u or holding a toy to someone indicating they want you to look at their toy or share it.(Berk,2012,p.238) Over time toddlers combine words with gestures.(Berk,2012,p.238) For example with arms raised saying “up.” Again indicating they want you to pick them up. You would want your toddler to combine words and gestures as early as possible because the quicker they do so the …show more content…
(Berk, 2012, p.253) Within the first couple of months babies will match the feeling tone of the caregiver in face-to-face type communication. (Berk, 2012, p.253) Some researchers claim that babies respond kindly to others emotions through a process called emotional contagion, while other researchers believe that infants gain these emotions through operant conditioning. (Berk, 2012, p.252) When a child is 3-4 months old they are familiar to the structure and timing of face-to-face interactions.(Berk,2012p.253) For example when the infants smiles or gazes at you they expect you to smile back ,the same positive reaction in return.(Berk,2012,p.253) By 7-12 months a baby is able to distinguish or realize that an emotional expression not only has a purpose but also a meaningful reaction to certain objects or events.(Berk,2012,p.253) Toddlers use signals for safety and security of their surroundings to guide their own actions and to gain knowledge of others intentions or preferences. (Berk, 2012, p.253) In conclusion there are many theories and theorist who try to put together the reasons of genetic and environmental development, cognitive development, and emotional or social development. Or what aspect or nature or nurture influences child development. It appears that the development of a child is neither just nature nor just nurture but in fact a combination of both put together.
